Like any This Is U.s.a. episode that breaks its own format to focus on one story, "Vietnam" might exist divisive amongst fans. If, perhaps, yous needed a piffling break from the angst of The Big Three (my hand is raised), yous'll probably be very into this episode that lays out some of the details surrounding Jack's relationship with his younger brother Nicky (welcome, Michael Angarano, you lot are so well cast), and begins to tell the story of their time in the Vietnam State of war. If you're extremely invested in Kate's IVF storyline or Toby going off his antidepressants or Randall running for city council in Philadelphia, a metropolis in which he does non live, well, you'll have to wait for the next episode. This is all Pearson Brothers, Original Season.

At one bespeak in the episode, sensitive, never-does-anything-correct Nicky wonders if life would make more sense if we could showtime at the cease and get in opposite, to figure out how we got to where we are. And that's exactly the formula This Is Us deploys to tell Jack and Nicky's story. Nosotros start in November 1971, with Jack getting dropped off by helicopter to a camp that is obviously not the one he's assigned to — the guy dropping him offers him luck in finding whoever he's looking for. Then Jack comes across his little brother, working in the latrines. But earlier we even go a look at Nicky's face, we travel back …

Three Weeks Earlier

Jack's a staff sergeant and he's leading his men through some dodgy-looking jungle. In that location are landmines and bombs and weather are terrible. Guess who'southward there? The guy we saw Kevin writing an email to as he starts his search for more data on Jack's time over there. Robinson. Apparently Jack was promoted rapidly, even though Robinson's been there longer — he'south ninety days abroad from getting to become dwelling and all he can talk most is trying out for the MLB. Of grade, nosotros've seen Robinson every bit an old man, missing his foot, so we know those dreams don't come up truthful — and so we see the attack on the group of men that leads to that loss. Jack of course takes care of Robinson through information technology all.

All the promos leading up to this episode were touting the fact that nosotros were going to see "Jack become Jack," which, ane) is a ridiculous sentence to type, but 2) what I think we learn is that … Jack'south always been Jack? Like, literally, his brother calls him Superman. And so really we've learned nothing, NBC promo section!

Actually, we exercise acquire a very fun fact. Well, fun is relative since this all takes place during the Vietnam War BUT as Jack is waiting with Robinson, he calls Jack out for e'er pretending to not be scared. But of grade Jack is scared. They're all scared out of their minds over there. And and then Robinson shares a trick he and his mom used when he was younger and scared that his father was going to beat them to death: His mother would agree his face and tell him to breathe. Robinson does this to Jack as he leaves — and of grade we've seen this before. It'southward how Jack used to calm Randall downwards, and how Randall quelled William'south fears as he was dying. We're watching the origin story to this piece of the Pearson mythology. Anyhow, I can't wait for Kevin to run across this Robinson guy in the present twenty-four hours.

Because of the skirmish they just endured, Jack and his men are assigned to a cushy security item in a small fishing village. When Jack realizes the village is close to where he thinks Nicky is stationed — it'south the render address on a letter he has from his brother — Jack orchestrates this whole thing to win over his commanding officer and get permission to exit for 24 hours and find Nicky. Run into what I mean? That'southward so Jack Pearson.

14 Months Before

We learn a few things hopping back this far. Outset, Jack'due south not in Vietnam. In fact, he has an irregular heartbeat, so he was able to get out of the draft. We come across that Jack's dad is still as awful as he'south ever been — even the mailman can't help but stare at Jack'due south mom's blackness eyes. And we see Jack's mom receive the letter from Nicky that Jack had with him before. From the audio of information technology, he'due south non doing well. He'south been "Article 15-ed," which means he's being disciplined, apparently for being a danger to himself and others. The rest of the alphabetic character isn't very hopeful. Nicky is sure he'southward going to dice over at that place.

So, what does Jack do? He goes to see his md and figure out how he tin embrace up his irregular heartbeat and enlist. It's Jack'due south job to be in that location with Nicky — whether or not he can aid him, he has to be there with him.

Oh, also we see Jack in his undies, if that'south something yous've been waiting for. I don't know your life.

Ane Yr Earlier

It's December 1, 1969 — the mean solar day of the typhoon. Nicky is understandably freaking out, but Jack reassures him as but Jack Pearson can. Everything's going to be fine and if it'south not, he has a plan. Of course he does. Earlier he was making plans for his kids, earlier he was making plans for him and Rebecca, he was making plans for his brother. If anyone understood that you could always rely on Jack Pearson, Nick Pearson certain did. He calls him his personal Superman — and Nick is always Lois Lane, in need of saving. Simply as reassuring equally Jack tin be, he's no match for the impending draft lottery.

Jack decides it'south best to watch it at a local bar, away from their begetter. Of grade, their father has a few option words for his sons before they leave — and y'all can easily come across that he'due south harder on the younger Pearson.

Obviously, we know Nicky is over in Vietnam, so it'south non a huge surprise when his birthday, Oct xviii, is called 5th. Yet still, the unabridged scene in that bar is pretty gutting. And because I'm a glutton for pain (I mean, I watch this evidence), I went to see when October 19 was chosen. Information technology was number 241.

Jack'due south large program is to help Nicky run abroad to Canada, but while on their way, Nicky realizes that his dad volition never speak to him again if he dodges. Jack wakes up the next morning to find an empty hotel bed next to him and a annotation: "It'south my turn to save the day, at present." And merely like that, Nicky's gone.

xiv Years Before

We come upon the Pearson brothers equally we've seen them earlier, only little boys taking care of each other. Nicky's already downward on himself and the fact that he needs to be taken care of by Jack. Jack'south already taken on the chore of building his brother back upward: He tells Nicky that he wears glasses simply like Clark Kent — they are both heroes in disguise. And yet, information technology's Jack who scares off their dad when they notice him almost to hit their mother even so again.

Afterwards, Jack'south mother feels how fast his center is beating. "It always beats fast," he tells her. He wasn't lying when he told Robinson that he'southward been pretending not to be scared his entire life.

7 Years Before

What a strange world this is, the 24-hour interval Nicky is built-in. Every bit Jack's mom is in labor, he and his dad sit out in the waiting room and his dad … is actually a kind person? What'due south happening? Then we meet Jack's drunk, asshole of a gramps and America is collectively like, "Oh okay, got information technology."

This nice version of Jack'south dad (seriously, it's freaking me out) is the one who teaches Jack the lesson he'll comport for the balance of his life: "Big brothers look out for footling brothers. It's their just job."

If that moment isn't plenty of a tug at the heartstrings for ya, This Is Us does something and then This Is Us: Nosotros learn that Nicky was born on October xviii, 1948 at 11:58 p.m. 2 minutes. It was two minutes that altered the grade of Pearson history.

Back where nosotros started, nosotros finally get a look at Nicky as he is when Jack finds him. He looks like he has been through some things. And we know it only gets worse.

You know, you guys, it's as if everyone's been like, "This Is The states could never get sadder," and the show sabbatum back in its chair, croaky a beer and replied, "Challenge accustomed."
